The Friday Mash - Kiss and Tell

August 16, 2009 |                     There was stunned disbelief at the ALP conference when Julia kissed Kevin in front of everybody. It seems the delegates were totally unprepared for any female but his wife kissing him voluntarily. It's not that they don't hold him... Full article »

August 9, 2009 | Amidst all the media's current doom and gloom, there has been one inspiring piece of news: the marking of the 40th anniversary of the famous picture of the Beatles crossing Abbey Road in north-west London at 11.35am on August 8 1969. It is wonderful to hear that it remains a... Full article »

The Friday Mash - A Union With Business

July 31, 2009 |                     It's a struggle for CEOs in the current business climate. Profit seems to be an ever more elusive goal and the federal government isn't helping. Julia wants workers paid more, Wayne doesn't want them redundant, Kevin has run out of... Full article »

Exploiting Foreign Students

July 30, 2009 | The poor treatment of foreign students in Australia has been in the news again this week. The ABC TV "Four Corners" programme explained the plight of Indian students coming to Australia and being cheated by some of the educational institutions, migration agents etc. My only complaint with the programme was the implication that this was somehow a new issue. In fact almost as soon as the formal "export of education" got underway in 1986, there were problems. In my 1995 book "Global Agenda: Economics, The Environment and the Nation-State", I raised some concerns with this process (pp 128-134). Australia has... Full article »

Balibo: The Massacre That Won't Go Away

July 26, 2009 | The largest loss of life ever sustained by the Australian media industry took place on October 16 1975 at the East Timor village of Balibo. Five journalists were killed by Indonesian troops. A sixth Australian journalist, who went looking for them, was later killed by Indonesian forces in the capital city Dili. The massacre has been back in the news with this week with the preview of the movie Balibo. All the governments that had citizens involved in the deaths have refused to reveal all that they know. It has been difficult to get to the bottom of it because... Full article »

July 24, 2009 |                     There is no higher calling than saving test cricket from being short-changed by 20 Twenty. While some are confident floodlit tests are the answer, wiser heads believe it lies in responding to the desperate plight of the cricket fan. Fans... Full article »

Evelyn Healy 1912-2009

July 14, 2009 |                           Evelyn passed away on June 28 2009. I was invited to speak at a "Celebration of Her Life" event on July 12 2009 at the Dalton Gardens Retirement Village, Ryde, NSW (where she had spent her final years). The crowded event drew together both the three generations of her extensive family and her wider "family" of peace and social justice activists and members of the United Nations Association (where she was a Life Member). Tragically she passed away only weeks before Fairfield Council is due to commemorate... Full article »

In A Different League

July 10, 2009 |                     In rugby league circles a sobering thought has been gaining momentum. Players are getting suspended, fined and fired for consuming the products of on-air TV sponsors which they are supposed to promote. In a non-descript bar in inner Sydney the audacity of hope has once again come to the rescue. One of the game's leading thinkers was forced to pause mid-schooner as he reeled from the shockwaves of not one but two flashes of pure genius. Rugby league and grog he realised were inseparable and what's more if it's ok... Full article »
