Archive Article: Are Humans Becoming An Endangered Species? 23 Nov 01

Technology and theology, science and ethics have often been at odds. Technological change once again requires more attention by Australian churches. The National Cathedral in Washington DC is about to host an important seminar entitled "Are We Becoming an Endangered Species? Technology and Ethics in the 21st century". This is a good reminder on the need to once again pay attention to the impact that technological change is having on our lives. This was a big issue in theological circles until about a decade ago. But that interest has evaporated and we now just take it for granted. For... Full article »

Archive Article: IBM And The holocaust 7th June 02.

In 1993, Edwin Black, the son of Holocaust survivors, visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. He wondered how Nazi Germany was able to track down and kill six million people with such ruthless efficiency. Part of the answer is: IBM, International Business Machines. Edwin Black's new book is called "IBM and the Holocaust: The Strategic Alliance between Nazi Germany and America's Most Powerful Corporation". IBM has spent the last five decades telling us how important it was to the Allied war effort - which it was. Black's book shows it was also of great assistance to the Nazis.... Full review »

Archive Article: Is Modern Society Making You Sick? 29 May 98

Is modern society making you sick? Are you living longer but enjoying it less? Maybe modern technology is not as good as we thought. John Ashton and Ron Laura, two Australian scientists, have written a very good book entitled The Perils of Progress: The Health and Environment Hazards of Modern Technology and What You can do About Them. The chapters deal with such matters as electricity, food, water and environmental technology. The book makes chilling reading. There are also plenty of ideas for action. For example, the authors recommend that people avoid using hand-held mobile telephones, except in an emergency,... Full review »

Archive Article: Computers And War Crimes. 4th April 03.

Computers are now playing a role in monitoring war crimes and helping to apprehend war criminals. No doubt they will eventually be useful in helping to follow up on all the war crimes associated with the Iraq conflict. The current edition of the "New Scientist" magazine has an article on Dr Patrick Ball of the Science and Human Rights Programme of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has spent 12 years designing software that collects information on human rights abuses worldwide. One of his biggest successes was in the Slobodan Milosevic trial. He wrote a report for... Archive Article" Iraq Back In The News. 7 Aug 98.

Iraq is back in the news again this week. There are renewed concerns about a confrontation over the international inspection of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. What are the lessons for the mass media arising out of these periodic confrontations? The World Association for Christian Communication is an organization of corporate and personal members who give high priority to Christian values in the world's communication and development needs. It is not a council or federation of churches. The majority of its members are communication professionals from all walks of life. The World Association has just published a booklet, edited by... Archive Article: Keeping War Out Of Space. 26th Sep 03.

While we are so concerned about the "war on terrorism" and all the other conflicts underway, there is yet another area to worry about: the threat of space weapons being deployed in the not too distant future. Such weapons are already in the development and testing stages. Dr Colleen Driscoll is the head of the Kurtz Institute of Peacemaking in the United States. The Institute is named to honour the memory a Washington DC-based couple of visionaries with whom I had many dealings in the 1970s and 1980s: Colonel Howard Kurtz and the Rev Harriet Kurtz. They were among the... Full article »

Archive Article: Leaders and Information. 16th Oct 98

There is always a great interest in leadership. But what is required of leaders in the current world of great change? Professor Harlan Cleveland, who has had a very distinguished career in US politics and universities, has given a set of lectures at the International Leadership Academy on "Leadership and the Information Revolution". There are six points worth noting. First, the information revolution is very different from the previous agricultural and industrial revolutions. Unlike tangible resources, information expands as it is used; information tends toward glut rather than scarcity; a common complaint about information is not skimpy rations but overload.... Archive Article: People Are Tired Of Change. Aug 98.

Reform fatigue is gripping Australia. People are getting tired of all the changes. They see themselves as the casualties of change. Well, unfortunately, the pace of change has only just begun. There's a wave of nostalgia sweeping across Australia (and indeed many other countries). Baby Boomers in western countries remember with fondness the good old days of the 1960s, especially the bumper year of 1968. Their parents yearn for the stability of the 1950s. But we cannot put the clock back. There are two major economic driving forces in world affairs: globalization and technological development. Globalization means that the world... Full article »

Making the most of the numbers - 1st August 2008

Information is now easier to capture because it is in digital form - rather than a person having to tabulate figures by hand (which is what I was doing in the War Office in London in the 1960s as a junior clerk). The progress in developing computers has enabled this revolution to progress rapidly. Information is now not only easy to acquire and store - it is virtually costless to copy.   Business and government professionals are relying more and more on databases to guide their decisions. It is a story about new breakthroughs in advances in technology - rather than... Full article »
