A New Strategy For Afghanistan?
March 13, 2009 | US Vice President Joe Biden, speaking at a NATO leaders meeting this week, has foreshadowed a new strategy for Afghanistan. It remains to be seen whether it will be an effective one. The intention is to do a deal with moderate elements in the Taleban and try to split the Taleban movement. This is a traditional British approach (most notably recently in Northern Ireland). The intention is to find a negotiated settlement to the conflict and to look for the guerrilla elements that are tired of the fighting and so are willing to consider a compromise deal. (The “true believers”... Full article »

A Return to Violence in Northern Ireland?
March 9, 2009 | Two British soldiers have been killed in Northern Ireland. This is the first fatal attack on British soldiers in just over a decade. We will know in the next few hours days whether the Real IRA (which has claimed responsibility) will be able to trigger a fresh round of violence - or whether the communities will remain calm. The shooting is a litmus test of the success of the remarkable NI Peace Process. I was in NI in the 1970s and I could see the level of hatred in parts of both communities. But we should not over-estimate the level... Full article »

Terrorism in Pakistan - Cricketers Targeted.
March 5, 2009 | The news that broke on Tuesday night Australian time was a worrying development in the history of terrorism in Pakistan. Cricket is the glue that holds East Asia together, a cultural glue that transcends religion, class and education. What was once sacred seems to now be fair game, a line has been crossed. One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. The group responsible for this attack may soon find that sympathy for their cause diminished with each bullet fired.... Full article »

President Obama Announces US Troop Withdrawal From Iraq
February 28, 2009 | US President Barack Obama has ordered an end to US combat troops in Iraq as from August 31 2010. About 50,000 troops will remain until the end of 2011 (down from the current 142,000) to assist with training. Then all the US troops will be out entirely. The President is honouring an election commitment. He was an early critic of the war. His initial views have been vindicated because the war turned out every bit as unsuccessful as he predicted. His great advantage over the then Senator Clinton was that she was already in the US Senate and went along... Full article »

An Historic Day - The Inauguration of President Obama.
January 21, 2009 | The Inauguration of Barack Obama has been a magnificent event. I was one of the Channel 7 "Sunrise" team for seven hours of broadcasting this morning - and all the team felt that we were witnessing history being made. Not only was it the largest-ever crowd in Washington DC for such as event (now over 200 years old) but it was also good-natured, with almost a carnival atmosphere. There was none of anger and bitterness of the two Bush events. Some of the points worth noting: Obama is the best presidential speaker since the actor Ronald Reagan. We were expecting... America Watches In Awe As President Obama Takes Office
January 21, 2009 | Over a million people packed into the mall and hundreds of thousands more lined the route of the inaugural parade to witness first hand the swearing in of Americas first black president. As the world watched on President Obama delivered a moving and personal oath of office heralding this as a new era of personal responsibility. President Obama had, in the lead up to this day stated that it is not all about him, it is about all Americans. His speech spelt this out, appealing for tolerance and co-operation. Obama pressed upon the nation the need for unity of purpose, the... Full article »
