David Hicks - Free At Last

November 21, 2008 | Australian Federal Police said yesterday that they will not seek to extend an order limiting the movements of former Guantanamo Bay inmate David Hicks. Hicks, a poorly educated Australian citizen, father of two and a convert to Islam, left home in Adelaide on November 11 1999 to go to Pakistan the gateway to Afghanistan. Hicks had previously been in Kosovo (again on a side allied to the West). Hicks was entitled to go to Afghanistan; there was no Australian law banning him. But it was a foolish thing to do given the conflict then underway. It was also an irresponsible... Full article »

The Importance of Volunteering.

November 17, 2008 | BROADCAST ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 2 1998 ON RADIO 2GB’S “BRIAN WILSHIRE PROGRAMME” AT 9 PM, AND ON OCTOBER 4 1998 ON “SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE” AT 10.30 PM. Volunteers are very important for many organizations. But can we always be sure that people will be willing to volunteer? The Industry Commission a few years ago conducted the largest ever enquiry into Australia’s charities working in the area of community services (such as Wesley Mission). The Commission was amazed at the number of volunteers involved. Australia depends on volunteers to a far greater extent that is commonly realized. But I wonder whether... Full article »

Money Laundering

November 17, 2008 | RADIO 2CBA FOCAL POINT COMMENTARY BROADCAST ON FRIDAY JANUARY 21 2000 ON RADIO 2CBA FM. The international banking system has stopped all US dollar payments to some countries in the South Pacific. It has been alleged that these countries have been involved in money laundering. This is the first time that the international banking system has acted in such a dramatic way. Of the six largest forms of international trade, only three are legal: the speculation in foreign exchange, the sale of oil and coffee. A fourth has some many questionable participants: the sale of weapons. Two are illegal: drug-smuggling... Full article »

The Red Cross Logo.

November 17, 2008 | RADIO 2CBA FOCAL POINT COMMENTARY BROADCAST ON FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 10 1999 ON RADIO 2CBA FM. With all the conflicts in the world, it is important to remember that there is one logo in all the world’s languages which means the same thing: “don’t shoot”. This is the Red Cross logo. The Red Cross logo is one of the most well known logos in the world - only Coca Cola’s is said to be more well known. It is therefore important that the logo is used properly. It is not, strictly speaking, a “first aid” or health logo. The Red Cross... Full article »

The United Nation's Financial Crisis - October 1999.

November 17, 2008 | RADIO 2CBA FOCAL POINT COMMENTARY BROADCAST ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 22 1999 ON RADIO 2CBA FM. The United Nations turns 54 on Sunday October 24. But it will not be having a happy birthday. The UN is on the brink of financial ruin, largely because the United States Congress has refused to pay over a billion dollars in back arrears. The UN is not an expensive organization. By the standards of government expenditure, the UN runs on minute sums of money. The UN’s central budget is less than that of the Council of the City of New York. The UN Secretary-General... Full article »

Australia's Foreign Policy September 1999

November 17, 2008 | RADIO 2CBA FOCAL POINT COMMENTARY BROADCAST ON FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 24 1999 ON RADIO 2CBA FM. Australia is paying the price for its lack of integrity in foreign policy. We are now being forced to get involved in East Timor to make up for the errors committed from 1975. East Timor was a forgotten colony in the Portuguese empire. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, I was a member of Lord Tony Gifford’s committee in England campaigning for an end to the Portuguese African empire. Portugal in 1967 spent as much per capita on its wars in Africa as the... Full article »

A Return To Opium Dens?

November 17, 2008 | RADIO 2CBA FOCAL POINT COMMENTARY BROADCAST ON FRIDAY 25th FEBURARY, 2000 ON RADIO 2CBA FM. Is Australia going to return to the era of the opium dens? A United Nations report issued yesterday has warned that Australia could be heading back to a situation similar to the opium dens of the 19th century. The International Narcotics Control Board is the UN agency dealing with drugs. The UN took over the task of stopping the use of drugs from the League of Nations. The League of Nations, which operated in the 1920s and 1930s, itself took on the task of opposing... Full article »
