The Millenium - Archive Article
December 8, 2008 | RADIO 2CBA FOCAL POINT COMMENTARY BROADCAST ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 31 1999 ON RADIO 2CBA FM There has been much debate over whether the third Millennium begins tonight or in one year’s time. I think that the Pope has the right idea: it began on Christmas Day last week - the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of the Man of all the Millennia. I am not going to get involved in the argument over whether the new Millennium begins tonight. Instead, I want to look at the publication of report of a United Nations conference held a few months ago: the... Full article »

National Security - Archive Article
December 8, 2008 | FIRST BROADCAST ON FRIDAY JULY 2 1999 ON RADIO 2GB'S "BRIAN WILSHIRE PROGRAMME" AT 9 PM, AND ON JULY 4 1999 ON "SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE" AT 10.30 PM. There is more to national security than simply the maintenance of defence forces. Australia may be able to learn a lesson here from the Philippines. Last Thursday I was a panellist at an Open Forum arranged by the University of Sydney's Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific and the National Defence College of the Philippines, for very senior personnel from the Philippines. The National Defence College publishes the National Security Review... Full article »

The U.S Prison-Indusrial Complex - Archive 31st March 2000
December 8, 2008 | RADIO 2CBA FOCAL POINT COMMENTARY In 1961, President Eisenhower coined the term "military industrial complex" to describe the way in which the military and industry were benefiting from the arms race. I think that the term could now be used to describe US prisons. The Global Futures Bulletin, published in Queensland, this month has an article on the US prison population. With less than five per cent of the world's population, the US has 25 per cent of the world's total prison population. The US has probably the highest rate per capita of imprisonment in the entire world. Compared with... Full article »

The Sound Of Bells - Archive Material 2004
December 8, 2008 | Broadcast Friday 2nd January 2004 on Radio 2GB’s “Brian Wilshire Programme” at 9pm Church bells are one of the distinctive sounds of Christmas and other parts of the year. It is interesting to see how Australians are pioneering the improvement in the sound of bells. The New Scientist magazine has an article by Philip Ball on this subject: “Mingle Bells”. Bells are rarely used in orchestral compositions because they produce a complex sound that jars with other musical instruments. Bells may “jingle” - but they don’t necessarily “mingle” with other instruments. When you listen to a church bell ring, you... Full article »

Sydney Public Forum: Global Citizenship
December 8, 2008 | What Binds Humanity Together? What should global citizenship mean for Australians today? How can we act together to advance our common humanity? In July 2008 Barack Obama, speaking to hundreds of thousands of people in Berlin about American ties to Europe, declared that "the burdens of global citizenship continue to bind us together". The challenges of global citizenship have been faced by activists in Australia who have struggled to create an equal and hopeful society, able to help humanity resolve the huge tasks of our era. Some of their experiences are reviewed in a recent edited book *. This forum will feature three prominent... Full article »

The Rudd Labor Government - One Year On: Australia's Place In The World
November 25, 2008 | The rise of China and the continuing problems of the United States create new challenges for Australia’s traditional foreign policy focus. For the first two or so centuries of European settlement, there are three broad themes. First, the traditional view is that Australia cannot be defended alone and so it needs a powerful friend that will assist Australia. Australia for its part needs to assist that friend. Originally (1788-1941) Britain was that great and powerful friend. Australia was very loyal. For example, Perth, Western Australia had on a per capita basis more deaths in World War I than from any... Full article »

Rudd Government - One Year On: Relations With China
November 24, 2008 | The Rudd Government has now been in power for exactly one year. It has been a tough year but the Government has managed to survive a lot of turmoil. Kevin Rudd is the first Western leader in history fluent in Chinese language and history. His knowledge of China is appropriate for the rise of the “Chinese century”. China’s contribution to Australia’s booming economy has contributed to a slow change in attitudes towards racism in Australia. There has long been a deep-seated fear of China: “the yellow peril”. The European settlement of Australia also saw Chinese workers arriving to help provide... Full article »

The Forgotten Prisoners From Afghanistan
November 22, 2008 | David Hicks is shortly to be freed. But what about all the other prisoners from the Afghanistan conflict still held in detention? I have been reading about one bizarre case. US journalist Ron Suskind in his new book The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism (Sydney: Simon & Schuster) talks about the Chinese prisoners on Guantanamo. (http://www.ronsuskind.com/thewayoftheworld/). Western China (known by some as East Turkestan) is the main Chinese location of Muslims: the Uighurs. Some Uighurs are resisting what they see as Han Chinese imperialism (this is a separate struggle from... Full article »
