Archive Article: Children And War. 23rd May 03.
December 27, 2008 | Children are increasingly victims of armed conflicts - both as the targets and even as the perpetrators of violence. Although victimizing children in times of war is not new, the scale and scope of this process is today without precedent. The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, based in Geneva, publishes an excellent review of disarmament issues called "The Disarmament Forum". A recent edition focuses on Children and Security. There are about 22 million children who have been displaced by war. It is estimated that of the 4 million war-related deaths since 1990, 90 per cent were civilians - with... Full article »

Archive Article: Family Reunion. 4th Feb 00
December 27, 2008 | There is never a dull moment at Wesley Mission. One can never know where an enquiry may lead. Some months ago, a Karen Clinch of Richmond NSW rang Wesley Mission to get some information about Dr Frank Rayward, who was the Superintendent of the Mission from 1938 to 1958. She was looking for her birth mother and this information on Dr Rayward would assist her enquiries. This is what we now know. The mother was Judith Elizabeth Amy Wilson, who at the age of 17, gave birth to the current Karen Clinch in 1958 out of wedlock. Karen was taken... Full article »

Archive Article: Corporate Crashes: Nothing New Under The Sun. 5 Dec 03.
December 23, 2008 | The only thing we seem to learn from history is that we never learn. The current spate of corporate crashes are in many respects similar to previous ones. One of the biggest in British history was the 1720 South Sea Bubble. This scandal was derived from a company that was supposed to do overseas trade (but had only a few ships), it was chaired by the King, had half of the MPs in the House of Commons as investors, and in which the Chancellor of the Exchequer invested a small fortune and had the wisdom to sell out once he... Archive Article: Doctors In The Bush. 13 Nov 98.
December 23, 2008 | The Australian Government and Opposition have both promised to give more attention to the concerns of rural Australia. One of the problems is how to deal with the shortage of rural doctors. The NSW Farmer's Association and the Local Government and Shires Association of NSW commissioned an extensive study by Monash University's Dr Bob Birrell on the "The Distribution of Doctors in Non-Metropolitan NSW". The report makes grim reading. In short, although there may be many lifestyle advantages of living in the rural sector, there will be an increasing shortage of doctors willing to work there and indeed, as some... Full article »

Archive Article: Drop The Debt. 4 July 03.
December 23, 2008 | One of the world's biggest scandals is the way that children are starving so that their governments can repay old debts to bankers. Australian churches are part of an international campaign to help those children. Jubilee Australia is calling on all Australians to push for the total cancellation of unjust debt owed by developing countries. For example, almost three decades ago, the corrupt Marcos Government in the Philippines ordered a nuclear reactor from an American company. The eventual reactor was built on an earthquake fault and it will never produce electricity. Coincidentally, I was on the election platform with Mrs... Full article »

Archive Article: Earth Focus. 30 May 03.
December 23, 2008 | 40 per cent of the world's population is aged below 20. 85 per cent of young people live in the developing world. The global unemployment rate for young people is two or three times more than that of adults. The world economy will need to create close to 500 million new jobs over the next 10 years, most of them for youth. These are all notable facts. I have obtained them from the very interesting magazine "Earth Focus", published jointly in the US, UK and France. It is produced by young people for "young people of all ages". One recent... Archive Article: Facts On Australian Foreign And Trade Policy. 1 Aug 03.
December 23, 2008 | Reading government reports is not always an interesting activity. But I have been reading one document that I am happy to recommend: "Advancing the National Interest" has been published by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Ministers for Foreign Affairs (Alexander Downer) and Trade (Mark Vaile) see it as a way of keeping Australians informed of the government's approach to foreign and trade policy. Going through the report, I came across the following interesting points. First, Australia sends a greater proportion of its exports to Asia than almost any other major world economy. Only Malaysia and Indonesia send... Full article »

Archive Article: Foreign Aid. 17 July 98.
December 23, 2008 | Is foreign aid from governments on the way out? Some Australian politicians have criticized the foreign aid that the Australian Government gives. There is a global trend whereby all foreign aid may have stopped by the year 2015. The United Nations Children Fund - UNICEF - publishes each year a report entitled The Progress of Nations, whereby the nations of the world are ranked according to their achievements in the fulfilment of child rights and the progress for women. The Australian Minister for Health, Dr Michael Woolridge, launched the report in Sydney last week. One of the articles in the... Full article »
