The Geneva Convention: The Hidden Origins of the Red Cross

War has never been for the faint hearted but back in the early 1800's many would have much rather died fighting than deal with the consequences of surviving a major trauma. It was during a protracted and bloody battle that Jean-Henri Dunant became so insensed at the blood-loss and tragedy of was that he felt compelled to act.
His book "A Memory of Solferino" became his mouthpiece, gaining him access to many people of influence. Dunant went on to form international aid agency the Red Cross along with his business partner Gustave Moynier- a recipient of the boook! While this relationship soon soured due to leadership differences, the organisation that the pair founded grew and continues to grow from strength to strength.
Their work with the Red Cross laid the framework for the Geneva Convention who's four treaties and three protocols still set the standard for the treatment of victims of war across over 190 countries. Angela's book brings the Red Cross history to life, offering up some interesting angles for business and charity leaders whatever their field of interest.
The book was reviewed on Radio 2GB. A recording of the interview is available below or can be found on our You Tube channel.
