Proposal For A National Aboriginal Uniting Place In Katoomba

As the historically significant 'Gully' (Catalina Park) in Katoomba has already been formally declared as an Aboriginal Place, this proposal recommends that this 90 hectare property be used to establish a National Aboriginal Uniting Place.

The property has potential to be developed so that elected representatives from the hundreds of Aboriginal Nations in Australia, can meet to establish their independent political identity towards their full representation in all United Nations forums.

In this second decade of the United Nation's International Decade of Indigenous Peoples 2005 - 2014, an Aboriginal Uniting Place in Katoomba could unite Indigenous peoples around the globe in greater solidarity to help ensure full global indigenous representation at the UN.

The Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra has been seeking national and international recognition of Aboriginal sovereignty since 1972. With the increased public awareness of and empathy for past injustices committed against the original peoples of Australia, it could now be possible for this goal of sovereignty recognition to be achieved in an innovative way that everyone will feel elated about.

The proposal includes a visitor centre with national and global Indigenous themes to raise awareness and funds for Indigenous unity and world peace. Katoomba is visited by millions of tourists each year.

Funding and support would be invited from State and Federal governments, the United Nations, the World Council of Indigenous Peoples, corporate and private contributors, philanthropists and public fund raising.

This proposal is for the Gundungarra and Darug and other Kooris and non Aboriginal people who lived and died in the Gully, and also for the beneficial knowledge it can bring to present and future generations.
